Could This Be a Dangerous Exercise?

As a parent, it’s sometimes difficult to allow a child to follow his instincts in the process of physical development. For instance, how many times do you hear a parent telling his or child to stop jumping, running or doing something because the child could hurt themselves?

Believe it or not, holding back on these urges “to correct” allows the child to learn in ways better than mom, dad or a future gym teacher or coach could train them. I specifically refer to the technique known as “guided discovery” that the International Youth Conditioning Association recommends for young children. It’s not necessary to teach a child a skill set like a push up or how to golf before the age of nine, let’s say. Of course, this is a bit of a generality based on chronological age, and if your child is very experienced in the ways of movement and is mature enough mentally, then obviously he or she can be taught a few skills.

Children are general learners and gain the most motor development from multiple experiences.  This is one reason why doing a single sport or skill set for a long period of time could inhibit that child’s ability to develop into a well-rounded athlete or a non-athlete with great potential to function! This also has academic implications. Read on.

“Guided discovery” is a simple process of allowing Read the rest of this entry »

This is where family fitness really is functional!

When the grass is getting tall and your kids are chomping at the bit for some entertainment, why not invest in a hand mower and get to work?! For a $130, this is a great way to burn calories, have fun with your offspring and get a chore done all at once.

You don’t think it will get your heart a-pumping? Trust me, it does. What is more, you’ll be more green not having wasted the gasoline to power your engine. Use your body as the engine and go at the speed that pushes you safely in your fitness.

10-minute increments are great to rest and get a drink of water in between. Sure you can break it up into five-minute segments, too. Whatever you do, have fun with it. My little guy just invites himself into the picture and wants me to chase him with the mower. It’s a lot of fun and an excellent means to squeeze fitness into a busy schedule.

Have a tip that helps squeeze fitness into your routine, then be sure to post a comment below.

What is more, I made sure to get interviews from the cream of the crop of fitness trainers!

So let’s begin with the most famous fitness personality, Rocco himself.  I had to ask Rocco what he’d like to advise parents on as he has trained many parents from many walks of life.  Listen and share your comments below.

    Nature-Made Fun Fitness

The other day Cleveland, Ohio was hit with a whammy of a summer thunderstorm.  My kids, led by my eldest, begged to go out and soak up the storm.  How could I resist?  I’d be out there, too, if I didn’t have four people to dry off!

Any time I can encourage fitness through play and closeness with nature, then I don’t hesitate as long as safety is not compromised.  It was so cute hearing the squeels and laughter.  Another added bonus: the garden was watered for me! :)

See what my oldest two had to say about thunderstorms.
