Posted by: | CommentsI have been following Dr. Pam Popper, a naturopath from Columbus, Ohio, and was moved to write this post about a study she brought to my attention, that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Here it is.
Overweight teenagers, even those on the high side of normal, are at increased risk of developing heart disease in adulthood, even if they outgrow their weight problems, according to a recent study. There’s a full article here.
For every 1 point increase in BMI, increases the risk of heart disease by 12%. Even those kids slightly overweight are at risk, which means that slightly overweight youth compound the overweight problem instead of obese children alone.

I can tell you what my biggest obstacles to staying fit are:
-I work from my home and am a few yards away from the kitchen at all times (and, yes, I like to eat).
-I also have limited time.
But I will tell you in my next post how I maneuver around those limiting factors.

If you celebrate Mardi Gras, you might consider your approach, especially if fitness is important to you. The typical high-calorie fried pancakes, pierogies and fatty treats are quick to store up as body fat. If your goal is to remain fit, then this approach will help you.
If you celebrate Ash Wednesday with fasting from food -in my Catholic tradition we are allowed to eat bread and water three times a day or have one single, meatless, normal-sized meal- then you will want to ease your body into this day of detox rather than shock it into a low-calorie intake after a high-calorie day.
