Wake Up, US Families!
Posted by: | CommentsIf abysmal, dismaying and frustrating don’t come to mind with these stats, then I don’t know what will (do tell me how you respond as these are my reactions to this data).
Dr. David Katz, pictured here has stated, “Our children will suffer more chronic disease and premature death from eating poorly than from exposure to alcohol, tobacco and drugs combined.”
According to data analyzed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the average teen eats fruits and vegetables 1.2 times/day.
Only 1/3 eat veggies less than once per day and 25% eat fruit less than once per day.
This information came from survey of 10,000 high school students, which shows a wide range of ethnicities, and this is what was pulled for various backgrounds:
-black teens eat even fewer veggies
-Hispanic teens eat veggies 1.1 times/day
-white teens eat veggies 1.4 times/day
All of these groups eat so few vegetables that their differences are negligible. Read More→

Recovering from family fitness stress

Recovery is when our bodies build themselves back up again, stronger than before if we are exercising and eating properly. One of my favorite modes of recovery is the foam roller. Here you see the Red Devil himself demonstrating how to work the tension out of one’s shins. He’s so smart, isn’t he?! Anyway, be sure you give yourself ample time to sleep, stretch and work the tension from your tight body parts. When was the last time you had a massage? (Please don’t go to your grave without the experience!!) The next best thing is self-massage with a foam roller. Notice I didn’t say it’s a complete substitute! It certainly helps aid in oxygen flow to the muscles while rolling away the acid build-up. If you live in Cleveland and have not come by to my Training by Liz Exercise Therapy class, which uses many tools including foam rollers, then you are missing a great way to unwind your body.
